10 Things to Know Before Starting as a Yacht Stewardess
Starting as a yacht stewardess can be complicated. You have to learn a lot in a short time, and you have to acquire behaviors you have never had before. Well, starting any new role is always complicated, isn’t it? In that sense, starting as a yacht stewardess is no different from that.
Although, we must say starting as a yacht stewardess is pretty unique. Your tidiness and cleanliness skills will have to be continuously at 100%. Moreover, sometimes you will feel you have to be ubiquitous. Some other times breaking physics laws will be the only option.
However, fear not, as you are not the first person to go through this, nor the last. As we know it can be a complex process, we wanted to put together some tips to make it easier for you to start as a yacht stewardess.
So, from a current stew to a future one, here are ten things no one tells you before starting as a yacht stewardess:
1- It will be an emotional rollercoaster
You will laugh until your tummy hurts, cry until you start laughing, and worry until complete exhaustion. You will feel physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged. Nevertheless, remember to be kind to yourself.
2- The cleanliness obsession
You will reach a new level of cleanliness. Order will become such a big part of your life you will believe you suffer from OCD. Towel and toilet paper folding, unnecessary labeling obsessions, nothing will be out of reach.
3- Work hard, rest harder
Generally, your days on charter will be up to 14 hours long. These periods of time can last for 3 or 4 months. You will get used to it, but you will need the importance of resting. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of elevating your legs.
4- Teamwork makes the dream work
As expected, sometimes you will not be at full capabilities. Mostly, due to seasickness. Eventually, you will get used to it, but you will probably never get over it. However, your team will be there for you when you need them. In the same way, try to be there for them whenever possible.
5- A balance between temptation and health
Cooking will not be a worry for you anymore. Probably you will not even have time to think about what you are eating. Thus, it is likely you will gain weight during your first season. However, this is very normal, as you will still be adapting to this lifestyle, and finding balance takes time. Eventually, as your time management skills develop to unknown limits, you will find your balance. You will learn moderation and find the sports routine that best fits you. It certainly takes time, so again, be kind to yourself.
6- Everything, everywhere, all the time
In time, you will be a little fairylike creature who will roam the yacht completing every little task in sight. Guests will never see, hear or notice you unless you want them to. You will learn that ubiquity is possible.
7- Paid self-care
Face wash, shampoo, moisturizer, deodorant, etc. Your toiletries will be there for you to use! Well, on most yachts, at least. Do not forget to take care of yourself, and indulge in some me-time once in a while.
8- Vacuum cleaning: hate to love you, love to hate you
You will love your vacuum cleaner more than some people in your life. You will become an absolute expert and learn how to use it properly. Taking care of it, driving it, and even the secret of adding lovely aromas to it. The will be almost no space unreachable with it.
9- Housewife with a salary
As a stewardess, the knowledge and skills you will acquire will make you a professional housewife. Moreover, these skills will serve you for the rest of your life, so it is a win-win situation.
10- Take each day as it comes
There will be no routine per se. New people, new places, and new experiences will be part of your daily life. Each day will bring them to you, so feel grateful for them.
Some final thoughts
Firstly, never forget that no one is born knowing and that every situation and environment is unique. Sometimes you will not know what to do, especially in unforeseen circumstances. In the face of this, think that learning is part of life. Each of these complex situations carries learning to do, which will help you in future occasions. So make the most of every moment, as every learning you do can serve you in the future. And, once again, be kind to yourself.
Secondly, think that in a while you will have changed a lot. You will have learned, you will have suffered, you will have enjoyed yourself, and you will have grown. At that point, look back on all that you have achieved. And when you look back, look at the people who are just starting and share all that you have learned. It is always in our hands to form communities where support and caring are the norms. Sharing is caring. This time, remember to be kind to others too.
Finally, as a personal request from our side, we ask you to love the sea. The sea is our source of life, where we live, and where we spend the best moments of it. Caring for the sea must be a priority and a collective effort, so we ask you to be part of that effort along with us.
