A record £5.3 billion in superyacht sales last year were fueled by the soaring wealth of the world’s billionaires during the pandemic, which sparked calls for tighter emission restrictions on these vessels.

According to recent statistics, 887 superyachts were sold in 2021, up more than 75% from the year before. Yacht brokers state, some of the demand has come from affluent clients looking for a safe haven from the pandemic.

Yacht designers are investigating green building techniques as well as alternative propulsion systems. These modifications have many benefits, including reducing emissions and the carbon footprint of a ship while also enhancing the aboard experience.

What can you do to help mitigate pollution as a yacht steward(ess)?

Carbon footprint

You have the option to offset the emissions from each bunker, all flights, land and sea transports, or lodging by contributing money to carbon dioxide-reduction initiatives like wind farms and reforestation.

Along with reducing the environmental impact of your yacht, it can give guests and charterers more confidence to enjoy their time on board.

Responsible Dining

In order to further reduce food waste on board, encourage your chefs to create menu plans based on the destination, paying attention to the sustainability index of the fish, and incorporating as many vegetables as possible. Most yacht chefs already source local produce, which reduces their environmental impact.

A number of suggested onboard solutions can convert any food waste into grey water.

Bamboo
Reduction Of Plastic

Every year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic ends into the ocean, where it takes hundreds of years for it to decompose. Nevertheless, it is easy to replace single-use plastics on board with sustainable alternatives.

Swap out disposable water bottles for reusable ones made of eco-friendly materials, then fill them up with filtered water.
Rice, bamboo, or metal straws should be used instead of plastic ones.
Utilize re-usable complimentary toiletries, offer crew and visitors material shopping bags.
Beyond plastics, you may simply avoid harming marine life by choosing toxic- and microplastic-free laundry detergents, cleaning supplies, and sunblock.

Sustainable toiletries

You can choose to switch from high chemical ingredients to natural and organic toiletries for your guests and also for the crew. Natural and organic certified products for the skin and hair produced under sustainable processes, recycle and recyclable packing, not leaving toxic residues in the water, and much more.

We are collectively seeking to transform the luxury industry through sustainable and ethical practices that not only mitigate their impact on the planet, but aim to contribute positively to its future.
